The Devitt House is located at 103 First Avenue SW in Waukon, Iowa. It has a great downtown location, just adjacent to the main entrance of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and is a convenient walk to many things this fine community has to offer. The house itself was one of the first in the community and although the “newer” section was built in the early 1880s, the original section is civil war era. Again this home has many unique details including peaked windows on the second floor, a unique handmade circular style staircase and old original painted pinewood floors throughout. It can comfortably accommodate about 8 people with four separate bedrooms. (two on the main floor and two on the second floor). It also features two separate living room areas (one on each level), two separate bathrooms (one on each level) plus a small formal dining room and kitchen downstairs. It gets its name from its previous owner, Gertrude Devitt who lived there for approximately 70 years and while doing so operated a hat shop from the 1940’s until about 1970.
